Teamwork

Palma Vegh, Signtrade, Queensland

Good Customer Service Most of us need the help of other people, so we can put our knowledge, energy and creativity together to succeed.

"Consider how incredibly difficult it would be to think of a new product idea or design changes to a process and then implement those ideas and changes all by yourself. No matter how smart you are, the different expertise, experience, energy, and perspectives of others make things happen. A smart team knows how to make differences work."

-Michael Maginn

Very true, isn't it? So think about it for a moment. How does your business operate? Do you have good teamwork in your sign shop? If not, it's probably time to work on it and you will be amazed what a difference it can make!

I'm sure that your business is made up of individuals who have different skills and who are experts in different fields like finance, production, marketing, sales, administration or management. But the big challenge is to make them work together as a team. Apart from the individual skills and expertise, the team needs to learn and practice certain skills to be effective as a team.

Communication between the team members is crucial! Any relevant information that is not passed on to other team members could cause a lot of problem.

Trust is another important element in good teamwork. You can achieve trust in a team by making sure that each member delivers on promises and the information provided to the team is accurate and up-to-date.

The team also needs to have a clear goal with a time frame. This goal needs to be something that an individual couldn't achieve alone. But you also need to be sure that you have got the individuals in your team with the right skills to achieve the goal.

For example, you could set the following goal to your team in your sign shop: "Create a company website by the end of June." Then organise a team meeting where you can discuss the plan with the team members. Make sure that each team member is clear about the goal and knows his/her role in the team.

At the regular team meetings have open discussions where everyone listens to each other and the team makes the right decision by asking "What if…?" questions. Make sure that the team meetings are well organised so no one gets bored.

And don't forget to bring fun into the team environment! Try to organise some outings from time to time where the team gets away from the office environment. In the new settings you can present them with challenges so they can prove that they can work together effectively.

It is also important to thank your team for the effort they made to achieve a particular goal.

Don't forget!

"None of us is as smart as all of us."

-Pogo
